Today Jason and I woke up to the sound of some guy singing really loudly outside our window. Trying to figure out what the heck was going on, I looked outside our patio and noticed people running on the street. Then it dawned on me….today was the Tokyo Marathon. I have a few co-workers running in it so the existence of the event was brought to my attention at work.

Knowing absolutely nothing about the event, I turned on the tv and flipped to a channel that was covering the marathon. It’s quite impressive I must say. For one thing, they closed off traffic on some pretty major streets in Tokyo for the event. The course itself is pretty big too….Here’s the map

We’re on the leg where Shinagawa is. It’s pretty neat how our apartment faces the road where people run by. It’s like we can watch it from our apartment if we really wanted to. I’m also always impressed at how many Japanese spectators line the streets to watch the marathon. It’s cute how many also have these little flags that they wave as the runners run by.

Ok, excitement over…back to our daily scheduled program.

Given the steepness of some the hills in and around Tokyo, this marathon seems more hardcore than it sounds!
