Mmmm, I like my Pepsi with a little bit of bean aftertaste…

Food, Japan

Japan has a strange obsession with mixing strange flavors with their snacks and drinks.

Take Kit Kats.

Every month, they come out with a few special limited edition flavors for kit kats. They’re not your run-of-the-mill, milk chocolate variety. Noooo…you get stuff like soy sauce flavor or flan pudding flavored ones. It’s chocolate though so it works out most of the time. Not all flavors work but enough do so it’s fine.

Then they go and give Coke and Pepsi strange flavors.

Now that’s where mixing strange flavors into those drinks can go wrong….

During the summer, Pepsi came out with a limited edition “Shiso” flavored Pepsi.

First, the soda is green. I don’t know about you but Pepsi looking green is a red flag for me.

Second, it’s shiso. SHISO!!! I personally don’t like the taste of shiso. What is it, you ask? It’s this minty green leaf that normally sits on your sushi plate at a nice sushi place. I think it’s called Perilla in English.

If you ever eat it, it’ll have this nasty bitter but minty flavor to it. Again, I find it nasty personally but some people like it.

Anyway, shiso Pepsi…I didn’t try it because the thought of it sends chills up my spine but Jason did.

His response: “It tasted a LOT like shiso.”
Note: He does not like shiso either but he has a strange obligation towards drinking weird drinks.

Recently, Pepsi released a new flavor. This time it’s Azuki Pepsi. Azuki is what the Japanese call red beans.

Being an azuki fan, I felt compelled to try it.

As you can see, the Pepsi is red. It should have raised red flags, right? Yea, I ignored them. It’s red beans, what could go wrong?

Well, I drank it.

My verdict? It’s not too bad. Actually, I’m not quite sure how to define it.

When you first drink it, it tastes just like normal Pepsi. Maybe a little sweeter than normal Pepsi…but you don’t really notice much difference. Then the aftertaste rolls in and it definitely tastes like red beans. It’s really strange actually. It’s like eating mochi and drinking pepsi with it. A really strange combination resulting in a strange flavor.

I’m still on the fence on whether or not I like it…. I’ll let you know once I finish the bottle.
